combined security team, made up of soldiers and policemen from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, on December 19, 2011, undertook an operation in the Tetrem and Aboabo areas in the Amansie West District, to flush out some people undertaking illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey. The operation, which got underway in the morning, ended late in the evening, and led to the arrest of 52 persons with some equipment, including special mills and water pumps, being impounded by the team, led by Superintendent Prince Waabo, and assisted by Lieutenant John Kwame Jabaari. A press release signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the Northern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, WOI Bright Segbefia, said the activities of these illegal miners were degrading the

environment. It was indicated that the illegal miners often attacked licensed mining companies whose concessions were being encroached upon. The situation, he said, had threatened the security of the district, as well as the region, hence the need for the security personnel to intervene |
