FOLLOWING rising cases of flooding, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and its collaborators have begun a nationwide campaign against indiscriminate dumping of polythene bags and other non-biodegradable wastes in drainage facilities and waterways across the country.
Other collaborators in the campaign coordinated by NOA include the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, The Red Cross Society, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Health Officers’ Regulatory Council, as well as the National Lottery Regulatory Commission.
At the kick-off of the campaign in the densely populated Nyanya area of Abuja, residents were enlightened on the implications of blocking waterways and subsequent flooding on both environmental degradation and human health. They were also educated on environmental health tips, as well as safe ways of storing used polythene for future recycling.
The traditional ruler of Jikwoyi (Esu Jikwoyi), Bawa Jetta, who participated in the exercise alongside his subjects, said there is already a community-based structure that would facilitate the sustenance of the exercise.
