EMINENT lawyer, Chief Afe Babalola, on Wednesday disagreed with President Goodluck Jonathan on the scrapping or otherwise of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Since the killing of some corps members in the post-election violence, which rocked some states in the North, there have been calls for the review or outright scrapping of the scheme.
Jonathan during an interactive session with some youths in Lagos on Tuesday ruled out the cancellation of the scheme.
But Babalola in his remarks at the 1st Prof. Abiodun Ilesanmi annual guest lecture at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, insisted that the scheme should either be reviewed or abrogated completely.
The Senior Advocate maintained that the national unity, which the President believed must be protected through the scheme cannot be brought about by sending students to states where security of lives cannot be guaranteed.
Babalola added: “It requires more than sending a hapless youth, in most cases against his will or choice to face premature death. The killing of youth corps members and utterances of our leaders show that the nation has failed in its 50 years of existence to achieve the type of national unity that permits of National Youth Service. It shows that Nigerian youths cannot under the guise of the NYSC scheme be used as tools or sacrificial lambs to achieve unity
