African leaders meeting in Mombasa on Wednesday called for a radical shift in politics and governance to speed up development on the continent.
They said greed, corruption and other malpractices had become the norm in many governments, condemning millions of people to poverty and suffering.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, told the Second African Governance, Leadership and Management Convention 2011 that the rot started at independence.
"After gaining political kingdom, we sat back, our arms folded across our chests and waiting for all other things to be added unto us. As a consequence, we fell back into being the Third World of the Third World," Mr Obasanjo said.
He said the continent was awash with natural resources and brilliant, hard working people bogged down by political turmoil, disease and hunger.
But the two-time Nigerian leader said it was not all gloom - there were many success stories from the continent - and challenged leaders and the media to tell them to motivate younger men and women to aim higher and dream big.
